Debate Formats & Rules

British Parliamentary (BP)

BP is a dynamic and popular debate format involving four teams: Opening Government, Opening Opposition, Closing Government, and Closing Opposition. Each team consists of two speakers.

  • Teams: 4 teams of 3 speakers (OG, OO, CG, CO)
  • Speeches: Each speaker gives a 7-minute speech. The first and last minutes are protected time (no Points of Information).
  • Points of Information (POIs): Opposing speakers can offer POIs during an opponent's speech (outside protected time), which the speaker can accept or reject.
  • Roles: Teams are judged on content, style, and structure.
  • Extension: Closing teams must bring new, substantial arguments (extensions) beyond their opening partners.

Lincoln-Douglas (LD) Debate

LD debate is a one-on-one format focused on moral, ethical, or philosophical issues. It emphasizes values and criteria for evaluation.

  • Teams: 1 vs. 1 (Affirmative vs. Negative)
  • Speeches:
    • Affirmative Constructive (6 min)
    • Negative Cross-Examination (3 min)
    • Negative Constructive (7 min)
    • Affirmative Cross-Examination (3 min)
    • Affirmative Rebuttal (4 min)
    • Negative Rebuttal (6 min)
    • Affirmative Rebuttal (3 min)
  • Focus: Values, criteria, and ethical frameworks.
  • Prep Time: Each debater gets a set amount of preparation time to use between speeches.

Policy Debate

Policy debate is a two-on-two format focused on a specific policy proposition. It involves extensive research and delves into the practicality and consequences of proposed changes.

  • Teams: 2 vs. 2 (Affirmative vs. Negative)
  • Speeches: Structured with constructive speeches, rebuttals, and cross-examinations. Typically longer speech times than other formats.
  • Key Concepts: Stock Issues (Inherency, Harms, Solvency, Advantage), Disadvantages, Counterplans, Kritiks.
  • Emphasis: Evidence, logical reasoning, and detailed policy proposals/critiques.

Public Forum (PF) Debate

Public Forum is a partner-based debate format designed to be accessible to a general audience, focusing on current events and common understanding rather than technical jargon.

  • Teams: 2 vs. 2 (Pro vs. Con)
  • Speeches: Short, alternating speeches, with a "Grand Crossfire" section for direct interaction.
  • Crossfire: Direct question-and-answer periods between debaters.
  • Emphasis: Clarity, persuasive rhetoric, and real-world impacts.

World Schools Debating Championships (WSDC)

WSDC is a structured debate format involving two teams of three speakers, often used in international competitions. It combines elements of parliamentary debate with a focus on argumentation and refutation.

  • Teams: 2 teams of 3 speakers (Proposition vs. Opposition)
  • Speeches: Each speaker gives an 8-minute substantive speech. A 4-minute reply speech is given by the first or second speaker from each side at the end.
  • Points of Information (POIs): Similar to BP, POIs can be offered during the second to seventh minutes of substantive speeches.
  • Roles: Speakers have specific roles (e.g., Prime Minister defines the motion, Leader of Opposition refutes and sets up the case).
  • Emphasis: Logical consistency, strong argumentation, and effective refutation.

Cross-Examination Debate

Often synonymous with Policy Debate or used as a component within other formats, "Cross-Examination" refers specifically to the question-and-answer periods following constructive speeches. In some contexts, it can also refer to a specific format where cross-examination plays a more central role.

  • Core Element: Direct questioning between opposing speakers to clarify arguments, expose inconsistencies, or set up future arguments.
  • Purpose: To challenge the opponent's case and reinforce one's own.
  • Role: Critical for demonstrating understanding and critical thinking.

With Debatify, you can also define your own custom debate parameters. This allows for flexible practice sessions, adapting to unique needs or exploring new styles of argumentation. Our AI will do its best to follow your specified rules and provide relevant arguments.
